The Batwa: Keepers of the Forest

📅 August 10, 2026 · admin

Long before Bwindi Impenetrable Forest was a national park, it was home. The Batwa — often called the “Keepers of the Forest” — lived as hunter-gatherers among the gorillas for thousands of years, reading the forest like a library.

From forest to village

When Bwindi was gazetted in 1991, the Batwa were moved out to protect the gorillas — a conservation success and a human cost that is still being addressed. Today, community tourism is one of the ways Batwa families reclaim their heritage on their own terms.

The experience

On the Batwa trail, elders walk you into the forest edge and the past comes alive: how to make fire from friction, which leaves heal, how honey was harvested from high branches, how hunting songs called the duiker. It ends with music and dance in a village clearing — no stage, no script.

Why we include it

Every Migina Bwindi itinerary can include the Batwa experience, and the fee goes directly to the community. It reframes the gorilla trek: you understand that this forest has a human story too, and that tourism done well helps write its next chapter.
